Heavy rain over Texas caused major flooding for San Antonio, while showers and thunderstorms turned severe over the Northern High Plains on Saturday. Onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico for the southwest, in combination with a wave of low pressure that moved eastward over Texas, allowed for extremely heavy rainfall to develop across south-central Texas late Friday into Saturday. Rainfall totals at San Antonio Airport, Texas reached up to 9.87 inches by mid-day Saturday. This broke the record for the heaviest rainfall over one calendar day in May for San Antonio. The 24 hour total from this rainfall event has reached up to 12.16 inches, but did not break the record for the heaviest rainfall over a 24 hour period for San Antonio, which is 13.35 inches. This system created major flooding for San Antonio and the surrounding area.

In the North, a low pressure system moved off the Northern and Central Rockies and created a warm front that stretched from western Montana into the Upper and Mid-Mississippi River Valley. This system kicked up scattered showers and thunderstorms over western Montana and eastern North and South Dakotas, while more widespread rain showers developed over Illinois and Iowa. Some of these storms turned severe with large hail and strong winds. Pea to quarter size hail was reported at Belfield, North Dakota and Burns, Montana.

In the East, a low pressure system brought more rain to the Northeast. Precipitation from this system turned to snow overnight Friday and into Saturday morning due to cooler temperatures, but most places that saw snow, only a dusting of snow.

the Flood Warning continues for Leon creek at ih-35.
* At 2:16 PM Saturday the stage was 27.1 feet.
* Flood stage is 15.0 feet.
* Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river level will rise to crest between 27 and 29 feet
early Saturday evening... then begin a rapid fall.
* Impact... at 26.0 feet... disastrous flooding puts near seven feet of flow in
buildings in the jet engine test facility at Kelly AFB. Secondary and primary
roads and bridges are severely flooded and dangerous to motorists above
Highway 90 to below ih-35. Numerous people must be evacuated from lowest
homes near Highway 81.

... Forecast flooding increased from minor to moderate severity...
the Flood Warning continues for the Salado at loop 13.
* Until Sunday morning... or until the warning is cancelled.
* At 10:15 am Saturday the stage was 11.8 feet.
* Flood stage is 18.0 feet.
* Moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river level will continue rising to crest at or slightly
above 20 feet by early Saturday evening then begin falling.
* Impact... at 22.0 feet... major lowland flooding reaches The Loop 13 bridge
floor and the lower half of the KOA Campground upstream requiring visitors to
evacuate the lower half immediately as park officials direct. Secondary
roads... low bridges and access roads are flooded and very dangerous to
motorists.

* Until Monday morning... or until the warning is cancelled.
* At 1:15 PM Saturday the stage was 17.9 feet.
* Flood stage is 20.0 feet.
* Major flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river level is now expected to rise to around 35 feet
early Sunday morning... then begin falling.
* Impact... at 28 feet major flooding puts the FM 1937 bridge floor under
eight feet of water. Flow approaches homes downstream near Losoya. Livestock
are cut off and potentially drowned in the flood plain.

... Forecast flooding increased from moderate to major severity...
the Flood Warning continues for the San Antonio River near Elmendorf.
* Until Monday afternoon... or until the warning is cancelled.
* At 1:30 PM Saturday the stage was 37.9 feet.
* Flood stage is 35.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river level will rise to crest between 60 and 62 feet
by Sunday morning... then begin falling. 64.2 feet is the flood of record
set October 18th 1998.
* Impact... at 60.0 feet... downstream in Wilson County people AR cut off by
numerous flooded farm to Market roads. Numerous homes are flooded in Wilson
County as well.

* Due to saturated soils... any heavy downpours that develop will
quickly produce runoff and a flash flood threat. River rises
have already occurred in some locations and will be prone to
additional rapid rises.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means flash flooding is possible in or near
the watch area. If you are in the watch area... plan now for what
you will do if flash flooding develops. Stay informed and be
ready to act if you see flooding or if a Flash Flood Warning is
issued.

a record rainfall of 9.87 inches was set at San Antonio today.
This breaks the old record of 1.66 set in 1933.In addition to
breaking the record rainfall for may 25th of 1.66 inches set in
1933... it also breaks the record all-time daily record for the month
of may which was 6.82 set on may 31... 1937.

It is now the 2nd wettest day of all-time at San Antonio.

.Overview...
A line of severe storms moved through Metro San Antonio early
Saturday morning. One cell produced a brief tornado in the
suburb of Live Oak.

path width /maximum/: 100 yards

start time: 525 am CDT
start location: 1.2 WSW Live Oak / Bexar County / TX
start lat/lon: 29.5498 / -98.3479

End date: may 25 2013
end time: 535 am CDT
end location: 1.2 W Live Oak / Bexar County / TX

Survey summary: the brief tornado did minor damage to homes near the
intersection of Judson Road and woodsrim St in Live Oak. The stucco
and wood facade of a medical building on Judson Road was totally
pulled off. Several power poles were snapped with trees uprooted
and mature Oak Tree limbs and branches twisted off several Oak
trees. A hospital had damage to the air conditioning units on top of
its roof and had some broken windows and doors. An aluminum storage
shed behind one home was blown clearly over two houses before
Landing in the backyard of a third house.
