While chopping some dead wood for the fire, as the bark fell off, I see these intricate patterns carved under the bark. Beautiful and semi-symmetrical. Anyone know what this stuff is? This pattern is probably about 2 inches across

I think you nailed it in your title: termites or other wood-burrowing insects have done this.

It looks a little like the Geoglyphic Art of Chile's Atacama Desert on a small scale! These tiny bugs carving these patterns cannot possibly know the pattern they are creating. First its under the bark, and 2nd, the patterns must be much larger than the bugs making them.
